Nikki (Nikhat) Powell
Film and Video Editor, Storyteller, Film Teacher

Every individual has a passion that drives her forward in life!

Mine is to do things to the best of my ability! Whether I am driving a car or editing a film or teaching a class, or singing, I like to give the task at hand my very best. When I was studying for my MFA, a 3.9 GPA wasn't enough for me. I wanted the 4.0, and worked harder than a mule to keep it there! I don't like to settle for less!

Some people have more than a single passion! I'm one of them. Present to me the odds where most would give in to them, and if I've decided I want to beat the odds, I sure will! Nothing will stop me short of it. Fall once, fall twice, try again! I've done this countless times in my personal life, and made it my way of life to never give up! My friends, my colleagues, my students - they know me for this!

Some people consider age the yardstick for having fun, or measuring achievement. Some people feel they need to constantly achieve, or their dignity will suffer. Not me! I'm always ready for any kind of work, be it at my 'level' (of seniority) or not. I pride myself on being able to enjoy everything I do, spreading positivity all around my team.

I've had a fascinating life - I was called in as an equipment consultant at a J school. I left as the head of the broadcast television department. I went from no job in hand to four offers within a matter of a week. I brought up two wonderful children as a single parent, working three jobs at a time to do so. To be there for them, I switched careers. I supported my 9 year old in making a film. Then I beat every odd to take it 1000 miles away to be the inaugural film at a film festival. (Now that's a film to be made!) I took a leap of faith and married a foreigner who I should probably have got to know a lot better before marriage, then moved to another country to be with him. (We've been together several years now, in case you're wondering!!) I crossed the oceans to stay in a strangers house to edit her documentary film - and it won an award!

Basically, you name it, and I'm ready for it! Whether it be living on a quiet lake, or working in a bustling metro, walking to the nearest shop three miles away or driving 3000 miles across the country, teaching kids who have otherwise been called 'difficult' or working with senior citizens, learning software to qualify me to apply for a job, or rehashing work I've done many times before... I'm game for it all. Deadlines sometime make me nervous, sure, but they get my adrenaline going. And challenge brings out the best in me.

Analyzing problems and applying my mind to possible solutions has led me to success. If one solution doesn't work, quicker than a flash, I discard it and go about searching for another one. Under my leadership, my AV department output increased by 80% in one short year (Head, Academic Delivery, SIMC Pune in 2013-14)

I'm not only about achievement and excellence, however! The other side of me nurtures peace and fulfillment. It may come through work, through a road trip, through spending an evening helping out an old student, through a skype session showing my aged mother the first snow I ever saw... simple delights, of a simple person. I live life on my own terms, on my own time, with my own friends and family. Most of my time, however, belongs to my work! I may never retire!

I used to dream of making a film. Until I did. My MFA thesis film got an Honors grade. It was accepted in 20 festivals across seven countries. It won 10 awards in categories ranging from Best Student Film to Best Director to Best Screenplay. I pitched for the world and I achieved it. I'm glad. Because I do not like to be limited. I shot the film in India, worked across continents and time zones to complete it, and will continue to screen it wherever there is an audience for it. I used to dream of writing, directing and editing a feature film one day. Now that I've done a short film, I am in a better space for this dream. I know dreams weren't made in a day. But dreams will come true. My next film script for a feature film is ready. It will get made. Soon.
Meanwhile, I am going back to my mistress, video editing. My wife, teaching filmmaking has now retired. If you're looking for someone capable, self driven, motivated and creative, let's connect!

May the Forces of the Universe be with you... and with me... and may we meet some day!
